High above the town towers the Wernigerode fairytale castle. Originally built as a castle in the 12th century, the castle was rebuilt in the 18th century by the young Count Christian Ernst of Stolberg-Wernigerode and turned into a Baroque palace.
The castle is just a 15-minute walk from the hotel and we recommend a walk up the Schlossberg hill with a subsequent visit to the castle. On the charming castle terraces you have a wonderful view over the entire town of Wernigerode and a magnificent view of the Brocken. The castle is now accessible as a museum. If you want to immerse even deeper into the history, you can explore the castle on your own or on a guided tour.
The descent back into town can be rounded off by a visit to the adjoining forest and the Christianental wildlife park. The entrance-free zoo is just a 30-minute walk from the castle. It offers you the opportunity to linger in the beer garden and take a small snack.
The way back to town takes you through the zoo along the enclosures with our native animals from the Harz mountains. On the way back to the hotel, you can stroll across the Nöschenrode district and enjoy the colorful splendor of its half-timbered houses.
